Climate Change? A White Christmas in Southern Spain

Hoping for a white Christmas this year? If you're willing to travel a bit, December snow shouldn't be too hard to come by. The Alps, Finland, Iceland -- all are guaranteed a bit of the white stuff.

Or you could head to the Costa de la Luz on Spain's southern coast. The weather forecast in the small town of Lepe for Tuesday calls for mostly cloudy skies, 18 degrees Celsius (65 degrees Fahrenheit) -- and snow showers from 8 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

This holiday season, the town's mayor, Manuel Andres Gonzalez, decided it was time for the 20,000 plus residents of Lepe to really get into the Christmas spirit. Not only will ice skating be on offer in the center of town, but for 15 minutes every evening, from Tuesday until Christmas day, snow cannons will blanket the main town square with snow.

"We'll use artificial snow and it will be spectacular," the mayor recently enthused to the Spanish press. "It will be completely new to see snow in Lepe. It hasn't fallen naturally here since the middle of the century." The mayor also said that it's for the children -- "because if the children are happy, so are the parents."

Lepe is located just a few miles from southern Portugal and is largely surrounded by swampy lowlands. The region is frequently the butt of jokes in Spain. It is also close to where Christopher Columbus set sail on Aug. 3, 1492.
