An end to the icy weather in Russia is nowhere in sight. Meteorologists expect the deep freeze, with temperatures around minus 20 degrees Celsius, to continue through the rest of the month. Moscow is suffering the frostiest winter in 27 years. In the capital alone, the bitter cold last night killed seven and caused 22 other people to be admitted to the hospital. The death toll in Moscow now stands at 123. The city's authorities have told the police to no longer evict the homeless from the subway at night in order to prevent further deaths. In some parts of Russia, the electricity has been cut and heating systems have fallen prey to the icy temperatures.

Although the weather is expected to improve marginally over the weekend, the next freezing cold front from the Arctic north will hit Russia next week. The cold front is now heading into eastern and western Europe.
