Candles burn in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate on Wednesday afternoon during an event organized by Amnesty International to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The movement to pass the declaration -- made by the United Nations on Dec. 10, 1948 -- was spearheaded by former US first lady and UN Ambassador Eleanor Roosevelt. The declaration establishes the right to freedom from torture, slavery, poverty and homelessness, among other forms of oppression.
