Picture This A Palace for Berlin

Dieser Beitrag stammt aus dem SPIEGEL-Archiv. Warum ist das wichtig?

This poster in central Berlin, located on the site of the future construction project, advertises the rebuilding of the German capital's long-lost Stadtschloss palace. The over €500 million reconstruction of the city's historic Stadtschloss palace -- which was bombed by the Allied Forces and then demolished by the East Germans in the 1950s -- was originally supposed to be completed in 2013. In a city with a massive public deficit, the project has long been controversial. This week, though, it got a second wind after the incoming government of Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives and the business-friendly Free Democrats made the project an official priority in their coalition contract. The ruins of the home to Prussian rulers and the German Kaiser is supposed to be transformed into an "opulent" complex with restaurants, shops, a first class hotel and even a business center. On Monday, the city's state secretary for building, Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, said the building was now expected to be completed by 2016.
