Tens of thousands protesters marched during a church-backed, anti-abortion demonstration on Sunday in Madrid. A new abortion proposal by Spain's Socialist government has angered the conservative clergy, breaking a delicate truce between anti-abortion activists and women's groups in largely Catholic Spain. The new abortion law is expected to be approved by parliament before summer and would allow abortion procedures with a doctor's certificate within the first 22 weeks of pregnancy. The country decriminalized abortion in 1985, but only grants the procedures during the first 12 weeks of pregancy in cases of rape and 22 weeks if a fetus is malformed. Otherwise, a doctor's note is required indicating a woman faces physical or mental health risks.
