Picture This Bangkok in Flames
Smoke engulfs central Bangkok on Wednesday as the last remaining anti-government protesters set fire to several buildings in a popular shopping and residential district.
On the same day, the leaders of the "Red Shirt" protesters surrendered after Thai troops opened fire on their camp in the district, killing six people and wounding about 60. The Red Shirts set up camp in the district for two months as a remonstration of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's government, calling for it to stand down, the dissolution of parliament and new elections.
The Red Shirts have called Vejjajiva's government "elitist and oblivious to their plight," according to the Associated Press. Protesters set fire to the stock exchange, banks and one of Asia's largest shopping malls, among other buildings.
