Construction of a temporary art space -- the so-called "White Cube" -- began Friday on Berlin's Schlossplatz square. The area currently houses the last parts of the Palast der Republik, the capital building of the former East Germany, which is currently being dismantled. The cube is to serve as a temporary exhibition space for the Kunsthalle art museum to be built there, and will house contemporary art created in Berlin. Designed by Austrian architect Adolf Krischanitz, it is expected to open on Oct. 18 and stand for two years. (The image here is a computer simulation of the structure.)
