A powerful bolt of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes Palmdale as a low pressure system brings unsettled weather to Southern California. This type of lightning occurs when negatively charged ions travel up from the ground and collide with positively charged ions in a cumulonimbus cloud. The strike then returns to the ground as lightning.
