An inflatable dinghy piloted by Greenpeace activists on Tuesday wedges itself between two Japanese whaling vessels hunting for cetaceans in Antarctic waters. The supply ship at left, the Oriental Bluebird, was attempting to refuel the huge Nisshin Maru, the Japanese fleet's main processing and factory ship. The Japanese fleet is hunting minke and fin whales in the name of scientific research; Greenpeace and other environmental groups are attempting to stop what they say is a purely commercial pursuit. Despite Greenpeace's efforts, the dinghy failed Tuesday to prevent the colossal ship from refueling.
