A Filipino fisherman casts his net amidst a vivid carpet of water lillies near the town of Paranaque, just south of Manila. The waters surrounding the 7,100 islands of the Philippines are home to a rich variety of marine life including around 2,400 species of fish. These fish stocks, currently under threat from overfishing and climate change, will be actively protected from 2011 when the government plans to suspend any new commercial fishing licences.
