This unlikely aircraft has the wingspan of an Airbus A340 jet, but it only weighs as much as a medium-sized car. And this week the Solar Impulse, a Swiss-designed solar-powered plane, completed its first real flight. In late 2009, the aircraft -- which is powered by electric motors which run off solar energy collected from solar cells in the plane's wings -- traveled 350 meters, but only a meter above the runway. But this week German test pilot Markus Scherdel flew the solar plane up to 1,200 meters (almost 4,000 feet) for close to one and a half hours. Eventually the Swiss team behind the project hopes to take the one-man craft, which took six years to build, around the world.
