It's another one of those strange carnival traditions so dear to Germans. Bavaria's so-called "Schnablerrennen," which sees costumed competitors race oversized sleds down a 1,000 meter tall mountain, has taken place since 1928. Thousands of people come to watch each year, although only those from the town of Gaissach are actually allowed to steer the sleds. The goal is to race down a windy, steep, 1.5 kilometer track without brakes or a steering wheel and then finally fly into the air off of a ramp. Those who fly farthest before hitting the ground win. So far, the record is 25 meters. This year, the race took place on Sunday, Feb. 22.
