A worker holds a book, dating possibly from the year 1301, found among the ruins of the Cologne civic archives. The archives building collapsed on March 3, killing at least one person and destroying most of its collection. The city is trying to salvage what it can from the rubble, but experts estimate that as much as 80 percent of the materials -- which included the complete papers of German writer Heinrich Böll, as well as a vast collection of documents from the Middle Ages -- will be lost forever.
