A young seal swims near Juist Island off Germany's North Sea coast on Wednesday. As pups, the seals had been abandoned by their mothers and rescued by animal protection workers, who took them to a nearby facility for orphaned or sick mammals. The pups -- Jakob, Emil and Eddy -- all weigh in at over the 25 kilograms (55 pounds) needed to survive the frigid North Sea waters. Officials at the Seehundstation Norddeich said they plan to release 36 more seals into the wild by the end of October.
