The German version of Carnival, popularly referred to as "The Fifth Season," kicked off across the country today. Each region has its own traditions. In this photo, taken in Mainz's Schillerplatz, we are treated the customary "Swollen Heads," who emerge every year on Nov. 11 at precisely 11:11 am to thunderously shout "Helau!" three times. The Carnival season extends to its climax 40 days before Easter.
