Picture This Here We Stand
An assistant fixes one of 800 plastic statuettes of Martin Luther, the German theologian whose writings inspired the Protestant Reformation, in the town square of Wittenberg. The figurine is part of German artist Ottmar Hörl's upcoming installation in Wittenberg, the city where Luther lived and worked. The mini-Luthers, which are each 1 meter (3.3 feet) tall, are modeled after a Luther statue that normally stands on the town square but which is currently being renovated. Some Protestant theologians have criticized the exhibition, even though it is partially sponsored by the Protestant Church, arguing that Hörl is making a mockery of Luther's achievements. Stirring up controversy is nothing new for Hörl, whose installation of 1,200 garden gnomes giving the Hitler salute in the Bavarian town of Straubing caused heated debate last year. The Wittenberg installation will be open to the public from Aug. 14 to Sept. 12.
