A thick layer of ice glistens on the rocks in the harbor town of Sassnitz on the German island of Rügen on Monday. According to meteorologists, the temperatures in the Baltic coastal area will remain below freezing for the next few days. The island of Rügen is famous for its towering white chalk cliffs on the coast of the Jasmund peninsula, which rise a majesting 120 meters (390 feet) from the sea along a 15km (9 mile) stretch of coastline.
