Picture This Imagine a Day Without Water
World Water Day was established by the United Nations 17 years ago to draw attention to issues around the world's water supply. This year's Water Day, on March 22, focused on waste water, the water produced when human and animal waste as well as industrial by-products are dumped into the earth's waterways. A UN report released today notes that two billion tones of waste are dumped into water every day. Here a boy in New Delhi, India swims in the polluted section of the River Yamuna in order to scavenge for coins and other ornaments left behind after Hindu rituals. Elsewhere around the world the day was commemorated differently: In Buenos Aires, Argentina protestors from Greenpeace dyed waterways a brilliant green to draw attention to the issue of waste water. In central London, UK, protestors demonstrated their concern by queuing up to use a giant, fake toilet.
