Photo Gallery: Hamburg's Swans Rounded Up For Winter
Picture This Kicking and Squawking
They had to drag them kicking and squawking, but "swan father" Olaf Niess and his colleagues were able to round up some 50 swans seeking from the cold waters in Hamburg's many Alster Lake canals on Nov. 22. The famous swans are transported every year from their digs near city hall to the "Mühlenteich," a body of water in nearby Eppendorf that doesn't freeze in the winter. Come spring, they'll be returned to the canals. The birds have been a highlight in Hamburg since the 11th Century, earning them a spot on the city emblem.
