A Kosovo Albanian woman peers out of her window after the butchering of several sheep. May 6 marked the traditional feast of St. George, the patron saint of shepherds. Celebrated in many countries and cities where he is also patron saint, his holiday is traditionally marked with a meal of lamb. According to legend, St. George was once travelling through a town that was forced to feed a nearby dragon two sheep every day to appease its hunger, or, failing that, an unlucky human inhabitant. One day, the king's daughter was chosen as the sacrifice. George rescued her and wrapped her girdle around the beast's neck, after which the princess was able to lead it around like a lamb.
