A massive fire on Monday ravaged a structure owned by Beijing's China Central Television that had been designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Although relatively new -- even by Chinese standards -- the structure had already become an architectural icon in a city that radically re-edited its skyline in the run-up to the 2008 Summer Olympics. Unauthorized fireworks, shot off in celebration of Chinese Lunar New Year, set a blaze that continued to burn in the building until Tuesday morning. Pictured here are the charred remains of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which was set to open this summer. In addition to the 241-room hotel, the building was also set to house a 1,500-seat TV studio, a ballroom, cinemas, galleries. Luckily, much of the building was empty at the time of the fire. Still, one fire fighter was killed and six more were injured in the inferno. In China, the disaster is being widely interpreted as a bad omen for the coming year.
