The only things flying at the Nicosia airport on Cyprus these days are the pigeons. Since an invasion by Turkish forces in 1974, the island of Cyprus has been split into two territories, Turkish and Greek -- the latter of which became part of the European Union in 2004. The airport, the building of which began in the 1930s, was the scene of fierce fighting and has been out of regular use ever since. Although it is also the headquarters of the United Nations peacekeeping force stationed here and was opened for a rare media tour on Tuesday, the most frequent visitors to the main terminal these days are wild animals and birds.
