Members of a band gather before a traditional Orange march in Belfast, Ireland, on Monday. The Orange Order, or Lodge, is an ancient Irish institution that, in recent decades, became well known as a symbol of pro-British sentiment and the Protestant religion. This put them in opposition to both Catholics, who were excluded from their ranks, and advocates of Irish independence. Every year in July the organization holds a series of parades culminating in a major one on July 12 (held July 13 this year). Over recent years the parades have been largely peaceful but this year a total of 82 police officers were wounded when riots broke out. It was Northern Ireland's worst violence since last year's annual march.
