Picture This Racing Rickshaws!
Pullers of the rickshaw, a form of transport used in many parts of India, got a chance to show off their skills on Sunday when they competed in a rickshaw race in the eastern city of Kolkata.
The race, organized by the Serve the Nation NGO, was an opportunity for the hand-pulled rickshaws to shine for once. "We believe this is the only race of its kind in the world," Sambhu Das, one of the race's organizers, told the Times of India ahead of the event. "This is a day for rickshaw pullers, who serve the city throughout the year but hardly ever get to hear a kind word," Das added.
The Communist-led government in the state of West Bengal had tried to ban hand-pulled rickshaws from the city a few years ago, considering it to be an inhuman form of work. But, in the end, the race was run -- and won by Laxman Yadav.
