Turkish Kurdish women demonstrating in Istanbul on Wednesday hold up photos of loved ones killed in clashes between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and Turkish security forces. The militant PKK, a Kurdish separatist party, and the Turkish government have been in a state of conflict since the 1980s. Some 40,000 have died in the struggle. In February, the PKK called an end to a six-month cease-fire, contributing to fears of increasing violence as June's parliamentary election in Turkey approaches. The election is expected to result in a third straight win for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Freedom (AK) Party.
