A South Korean tank fires smoke shells in Paju as part of a joint military drill with the United States on Wednesday, June 8. The show of unity was reportedly undertaken in hopes of deterring North Korea from any aggressive actions. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been running especially high since last November, when it was reported that North Korea had completed a centrifuge plant that could potentially be used to enrich uranium and enhance the country's nuclear arsenal. Additionally, on November 23, 2010, an attack was launched on a South Korean military point on Yeonpyeong Island, killing two soldiers and forcing residents of the local fishing village to flee by boat.
