Massive student protests paralyzed Rome's busy Navona square on Wednesday as pupils of all ages clashed with riot police and with one another while expressing discontent over a new educational reform package just signed into law. The new reform includes a return to an earlier system whereby students can flunk an entire year if they fail to achieve a high mark in "conduct." The protests today pitted left-leaning students against right-wing groupings who favor the new rules. At least four people and innumerable cafe chairs were damaged.
