Two boys look at pictures of people who were shot at the inner-German border at the Berlin Wall memorial on Bernauer Strasse in Berlin. Friday, Aug. 13 will mark the 49th anniversary of the start of construction on the wall that was to divide the city from 1961 to 1989. The private museum at Checkpoint Charlie, one of the eight border crossings between East and West Berlin, recently upped its estimate of the number of people who lost their lives trying to flee the communist German Democratic Republic from 1,347 to 1,393. Just one year before the wall was finished, 200,000 people had left East Germany permanently.
