A resident runs along a stairwell in an underground garage as floodwater pours down from above in Chengdu, China. Since June, severe rainstorms have caused flooding and mudslides across the country, including the southwestern Sichuan Province, where Chengdu is located. More than 500,000 people in seven provinces have been forced to leave their homes and seek safety. While heavy rains in these parts of China are not unusual this time of year, some climate experts have expressed concern about the rapid shift from extremely dry weather to flooding, suggesting it could be the result of climate change.
