SPIEGEL Surfs the Web Are Newspapers Dying?

The Brits dish up a Happy Meal sized history of Ukraine, a service in Kiev tracks the worlds coverage of its historical post-election protests. And a New York journalism professor says the newspaper as we know it is toast.

Short attention span theater: In its online edition on Friday, Britain's Guardian newspaper offers a multimedia "brief history " of Ukraine. For more local coverage, check out the Kiev Post. You can get all the coverage from Google News, but for an interesting perspective, you can also check out how Ukrainians are watching  the world's coverage of what's happening. Meanwhile, the Organization Security and Cooperation in Europe studied the Ukranian media's election coverage. We knew government candidate Viktor Yanukovych got the most attention, but the OSCE's 84 percent  even shocked us.

Are newspapers screwed ? A New York University journalism professor notes in a Wired News article that circulation at the Washington Post is falling so rapidly that the company brought together six focus groups to study how to attract younger readers. The higher ups didn't like what they heard: The groups said they wouldn't take a subscription to the newspaper, even if it were free. Instead they get their daily dose from blogs, Google News, RSS feeds and PDAs. SPIEGEL INTERNATIONAL, incidentally, comes in several flavors, including RSS .
