Britain's Department for International Development has teamed up with the Rough Guide, the publishing house behind our favorite line of travel guides, to produce a guide for responsible living in the age of global warming, pollution and international crises. The Rough Guide to a Better World  offers lifestyle and travel tips broken down into five easy steps aimed at making terra firma a better place for the next generation.

Of course we'd prefer that you make SPIEGEL INTERNATIONAL your portal of choice when looking for European views on what's happening in the world. But we'll also point you to other sites when we come across interesting writing. In recent days, we've noticed a number of English-language editorials in our RSS readers from Die Zeit , one of Germany's leading opinion publications. In one op/ed published this week, political correspondent Constanze Stelzenmueller argues that drugs in Afghanistan are one of the country's biggest problems -- something needs to be done -- not a "Plan Colombia" like the US's disastrous war on drugs in South America, but a major program that would help wean the country from its reliance on the opium business.

Paris's Musée d'Orsay is showcasing an exhibit of the mind-blowing photographs by physician and physiologist Etienne-Jules Marey, whose research in the 19th century led directly to the invention of the movie camera. For those who can't make it to Paris, "Movement In Light" is a stunning online exhibition  of Marey's work.
