SPIEGEL Surfs the Web Mommy Rock

The phrase "mother of four" doesn't normally call up images of a thrash metal guitarist. But maybe it should. Housewives across the United States are giving birth to a number of punk and rock bands. With songs like "Pee Alone" and "Pick Up Your Socks," how can they go wrong?

My Mom Rocks

They call themselves "the wackiest, most fun wo-momest women on the freakin' planet." In their daily lives, most are housewives. But the members of "Housewives On Prozac"  also moonlight as punk rockers. Sort of. Their song titles give a hint that this band is a tad different from the Dead Kennedys. Here are a few: "Eat your Damn Spaghetti," "Pee Alone," and "I Broke My Arm Shopping at the Mall." Their leader, Joy Rose, is a former punker queen who gained fame in the underground scene in New York in the 1980s. Now she is a mother of four and feels it is her mission to spice up the lives of suburban soccer moms everywhere.

They're not the only housewife rockers out there. "Frump,"  an all-mom band from Dallas, Texas is likewise ripping it up with such tunes as "Pick Up Your Socks" and "Drop Dead Gorgeous" -- both to be found on their CD "Cuz Moms Rock!" And there are many more including Mrs. Robinson, Candy Band, and The Mydols. Read up on mommy mosh pits at Mamapalooza .

The Year of Einstein

Perhaps the best way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity is to revisit his work and words. The Albert Einstein Archives Online  offers the first-ever online access to Einstein's scientific and non-scientific manuscripts, which are stored at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Einstein was arguably the brightest intellect of the modern era and helped usher in the nuclear age. No doubt the theory of relativity pushed science forward. Yet it also opened the world to tremendous human tragedy -- it paved the way for nuclear bombs.

The site offers a look inside the mind of the man, providing 43,000 records of written by or about Einstein-related documents. Plus, over 3,000 digitized images allow you to see Einstein's notes -- including the famous E=mc squared formula -- in his own handwriting. The site also includes lectures Einstein delivered to his students, personal letters in which he shows his concern for the fate of East European Jews after World War I and his feelings about his growing fame. Plus, travel diaries and Einstein's own description of why German's increasing militarism made him give up his German passport in exchange for a Swiss one.

Remembering Germany's other Literary Giant

2005 is officially the "Year of Schiller" in Germany, with homages to author Friedrich Schiller, who was Wolfgang von Goethe's best friend, planned across the country. But one of the best memorials to his work is Project Gutenberg, which has placed the full-text versions of more than 30 of his books  and poetry volumes on the Internet -- from Love and Intrigue  to William Tell  to The Robbers  , one of the greatest tomes of the German Sturm und Drang period.
