SPIEGEL Surfs the Web Politically Incorrect Top 10
Want to know what were the Top 10 politically (in)correct words of 2005? Or who are the 25 Britons who yield most influence in America, who wrote the worst sex scene in fiction this year, or what were the 10 most violent video games? Then look no further. The Fimocluos Web site is the place to go to recap on the best and worst that 2005 had to offer. As it says itself, the site serves to "devour the filth expunged on the mediascape."
Good Sex versus Bad Writing
It's kind of like the Darwin Awards -- one of those annual Internet events that we all look forward to. But with nominees like John Updike, Salman Rushdie and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the annual Bad Sex in Fiction Award -- handed out by Britain's Literary Review -- comes with a gravitas that other such prizes just can't match. Honoring the worst sex scene in fiction, this year's award went to Giles Coren. He deserved it. In his book "Winkler," he compared his protagonist's penis with a "shower dropped in an empty bath." He joins a distinguished group of past winners.
Torturing Troublesome Teens
Most people are aware that the older you get the more likely you are to becoming hard of hearing. But apparently it's not just grandpa who can't hear as well as those young whippersnappers. It seems teenagers have the ability to heard higher frequencies than most adults and one enterprising guy from Wales has decided to exploit that physiological phenomenon to help rid shopkeepers of pesky and troublesome youths. Howard Stapleton has invented the Mosquito -- a sonic device that emits an annoying high-frequency noise that can for the most part only be heard by those under 20. A test unit has successful chased away a pack of surly teenagers that used to darken the stoop of one Welsh grocer. Now if someone can just come up with a device to shoo away those people that stuff our mailboxes full of junk mail. And telemarketers.
