The Commander is Responsible for the Crimes

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on behalf of eight men tortured while in the custody of US troops. The idea that Rumsfeld bears some responsibility for torture crimes like Abu Ghraib is nothing new -- a human rights group tried to bring a similar case against Rummy in Germany -- the case will be the first legal test of just how much he should answer for. One Man, One Plane, No Stops

Taking off from Salina, Kansas at 6:45 local time on Monday, Steve Fossett is en route to making the first solo flight around the world without stopping or refuelling. His plane, the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, has three fuselages, kind of like a trimaran sail boat, and two of them are entirely for fuel. In fact, at take off, 83 percent of the plane's weight was made up by fuel. Flying at around 45,000 feet, the journey is expected to take him about 80 hours -- and Steve will spend the entire time in the 7-foot-long cockpit. Follow his progress here , including live video feeds, or read more about Steve on his own Web site .

The Political Oscars

The Oscars. A time to celebrate pageantry, fashion, beauty and ... umm ... Oh yeah, and Hollywood films. But as every year, when the Academy eyes the year in film to hand out its prestigious awards, many others likewise feel the need to hand out their own awards. Arianna Huffington is no exception. With the little golden statues now having been divvied up, its now time to revisit her "political Oscars"  for 2005. From worst sequel (Bush/Cheney 2004) to worst Mega-Buck Action Fantasy (George Bush's "A Democratic Iraq") it's all there.
