SPIEGEL Surfs the Web Thought-Controlled Computers
No keyboard, no mouse and no joystick, and they are still playing pong on a computer screen . Admittedly you do need an awful lot of cables and a headset that looks like a 1970s shower cap, but being able to operate a computer by thought process alone is still pretty impressive. Another video shows how the technology can also be used for typing .
The technology, which is called a Brain Computer Interface or BCI, is the result of a state-funded cooperation between the US and Europe. And snce both the well-respected Fraunhofer Institute and Berlin's Technical University are involved, it must be for real. After cerebral electric activity is picked up by electrodes attached to the scalp, signals are then transformed into computer commands. The long-term aim is to allow a mouse pointer to be controlled by brain waves, or tools which can be used for patients suffering from quadriplegia.
Classic, Cult or Just Clunky?
The underwater monsters may look about as convincing as Paris Hilton doing Shakespeare, and the acting not much better, but watching these cult movies can be scarily addictive -- certainly scarier than the monsters. It's not so much will the world end, but when? And exactly at what point will the heroine opt to scream and faint rather than simply run away?
Veoh offers 90 such cult films for online download.
But thrown in amongst the Bela Lugosi high camp nonsense, are also genuine ground-breaking masterpieces such as F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic "Nosferatu" -- still more chilling than anything Hollywood produces today.
Flipping Faster through Flickr Photos
Many people know that flickr -- the photo site open to all comers -- is pretty darn cool. And a number of you may have already figured out that flickr has introduced a new "interestingness" feature . The feature allows users to take a look at the most intriguing pictures posted to the site on a given day. But did you know it's already been hacked? That's right -- hacked and been made even better -- by flickr leech. Now, you can fill your screen with thumbnails of the best pictures from any day of your choosing. But make sure you have quite a bit of spare time. It's highly addictive.
