The blunders made by the Germans in the search for terrorists.
Code Name Cambridge
Banks: President Bush is counting on the economic power of the USA in addition to military force. He hopes to enlist the banks in the investigation of the financing of the terrorist networks. Mysterious tracks and trails have turned up in the hunt for Osama bin Laden also within the Deutsche Bank.
Deadly, if Necessary
Airline safety: For the first time, men from the anti-terror squad GSG-9 will be flying on board Lufthansa planes. But Otto Schily, the German minister of the interior, is thinking even further: he is considering a sky marshal programme. This might be modelled on the American Federal Air Marshal Program. Air marshals are government-employed specialists under the jurisdiction of the US Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, who are, in future, to be employed on virtually all US scheduled flights. Presumably, the German Bundestag will have to create the specific legal foundations for the use of sky marshals. Because according to the Tokyo Convention on Aircraft, the pilot is actually in charge on board; he alone has power of command. Therein lies the dilemma for pilots and special commandos. The pilots union Cockpit is all in favour of deploying security staff, but adds that our role as commanding officers must not be impaired.
Eradicating Terrorism
SPIEGEL interview with the head of the US investment bank Goldman Sachs, Henry Paulson, on the terrorist attacks on the USA and the consequences for the world economy:
I cannot imagine that a single event will impair the long-term strength of the US economy, or the world-wide economy either. The key to victory will be to stop the flow of money to the terrorists. Average economic growth in the major industrialised countries will be close to zero in the third quarter, and possibly even negative in the fourth quarter. But wed be very surprised if we didnt experience a strong economic upswing everywhere in the world next year. In the longer run I am very optimistic about Europe, and particularly about Germany, especially because of the future tax-free sale of shareholdings. That will have enormous effects on the willingness of companies to set up new ones. But in the short term things will be difficult. There has indeed been some criticism recently, but we have cleared up all the issues with our customers.
Free Fall
Huge losses are devouring the already meagre reserves of chip manufacturer Infineon. Is the one-time darling of the stock market threatened by insolvency? The electronic group Siemens floated its subsidiary Infineon on the stock market only last year, at the peak of the share and chip boom. The proceeds all went into Siemenss coffers Infineon received nothing. Thus the chip manufacturer was released into freedom with an inadequate financial cushion.
Israels Occupation Is Terror
Interview with PFLP activist and erstwhile aeroplane hijacker Leila Chalid on Bushs hunt against Osama bin Laden and the deployment of American troops against Afghanistan:
The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon are neither part of a war of liberation, nor do they serve a good cause. But most of all it is still not clear who is responsible for them. If the Americans take apart Afghanistan now, it will lead to a never-ending exchange of blows. What is needed now is to call an international conference in which the term terrorism has to be defined. George Bush has spoken of a crusade against terrorism. But we only welcome an honest declaration of war against all manifestations of terrorism and I emphasise all. In Palestine we are all fighting under a common intifada leadership, side by side with the Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Fatah and others. Because here it is a matter of liberation from the yoke of terror through occupation.
Picasso Was a Curse
SPIEGEL interview with Marina Picasso on the dominance of her famous grandfather Pablo Picasso and her childhood in the shadow of the genius:
Picasso wouldnt tolerate any strong characters around him. He wanted everyone else to be weaker than him. Thats why he squeezed out everyone around him just like his tubes of paint. We were all at his mercy, and he knew it. He saw how weak our parents were, that they were only his puppets. That was probably also one of the reasons my father so often took us along with him to Picasso, because he didnt dare go there on his own. We lived on the poverty line and he did nothing about it.
You Remain an Absolute Beginner
SPIEGEL interview with singer and writer Leonard Cohen on his years in a Californian Zen centre, depression and his new album:
Anyone who tries to resist the strict rules wont last long in a monastery. I found that the routine was a source of strength for me. You live side by side, work together, love, hatred, everything is heightened because you are living at such close quarters. First of all, the new album came about more by chance: I happened to meet an old friend I used to work with, in the shopping mall. And also, silence is not so much a matter of talking or singing, but rather of inner peace. The album came about from the depth of this inner tranquillity. In art its like in love: there are no rules that you can learn. You always remain an absolute beginner.
Rockets in the Junk Room
Museums: The worlds largest technological museum is being planned in Berlin. The project is to rectify a defect that has existed for many years: the depots of the German capital are overflowing. Thousands of veteran cars, rocket engines and dentists chairs are decaying in locked-up warehouses. Before the Second World War, 100 technical collections were exhibited in the capital. Afterwards, the tradition was discontinued. The situation did not change again until 1982, when an area alongside the Anhalterbahnof which had been flattened by bombs was cleared for a museum. The plans indicate a further dazzling extension of the technological museum, bringing the total exhibition area to 50,000 square metres. What remains unclear is, who is to foot the bill for the construction costs, coming to about 240 million marks. The city of Berlin itself is hopelessly in debt.
The Thin Boys Society
Medicine: More and more young men are suffering from eating disorders. One anorexic in seven dies in spite of treatment. Therapists and doctors in specialist clinics are giving up the cliché of anorexia as a girls disease. Violence seems to play a different role in anorexic boys than it does in self-starving girls. Male sexuality, penetration, conquest is a very difficult issue when you are faced with a very aggressive man in the form of your father, says clinical physician Hartmut Imgart. The boys become afraid when, as their joints and muscles grow, their own body becomes more and more like that of their father. They want to prevent that at all cost.
Hotel in Space
Space travel: The private enterprise MirCorp intends to build the first space station for tourists. Three weeks of weightlessness are to cost about 40 million marks.
Harry Potter from the Spree River
Soccer: Doubts are increasing as to whether Sebastian Deisler is overtaxed by his role as the saviour of the German national team. The fuss being made about him is a burden to the young star. Now he has decided he no longer wants to be an object of worship for teenies.
