Berlinale Bear of the Day
"I was utterly terrified when I had to sing 'My Funny Valentine' without any preparation at all," Matt Damon said, recalling director Anthony Minghella's instructions. But he went ahead and sang it, the Chet Baker classic, and proved himself talented indeed. That must have given the moderator of the press conference for "The Talented Mr. Ripley" an idea: He asked Matt Damon and Jude Law to sing "Tu vuó fa l'Americano" for entire room of journalists. Just like in the film. Right here, right now.
The two stars demurred. Jude Law complained of a sore throat and Matt Damon suggested that the sound system wouldn't be able to handle it - there'd be a short circuit. Anthony Minghella then came to the rescue of his leading actors. Tonight, he said, the two stars will surely break into song in some bar in Berlin. The tabloids will have to position their scouts.
